Created by Medical Doctor and Neuroscientist, Dr Ronald Ruden, in collaboration with his brother Dr Steven Ruden, The Havening Techniques® (also known as ‘Havening’) is a new approach in the field of Psychosensory Therapy.
The name Havening comes from the fact it is a step-by-step process that puts your emotional responses into a safe space – a haven.
As part of its protocol The Havening Techniques uses the sensory input of human touch as a therapeutic tool which they have identified as ‘Havening Touch’.
Havening Techniques® is a healing modality that is designed to help individuals to rapidly overcome problems that are the consequence of traumatic encoding. This psychosensory therapy is designed to change the brain & de-traumatize the memory - removing its negative effects from both our psyche and body.
Past experiences can stay with us throughout our lives, these experiences can be anything from a minor event to significant trauma, that are still producing symptoms in the present that produces a disproportionate emotional response to similar situations response. Our brain is very literal and doesn’t have the ability to rationally and logically gauge what should be traumatic or not, so based on the way the experience was actually perceived at the time.
The consequences of traumatic encoding and stressful life events can be both physical and psychological.
While we can’t provide any guarantees, Havening Techniques® has been shown to effectively help:
It works by changing the brain to de-traumatise the memory and remove its negative consequences of particular stressful life events or traumatic experiences. As part of it’s protocol, the Havening Techniques® uses the sensory input of Havening Touch® which can either be facilitated or self applied, which triggers the delta waves in the brain.
The delta waves in turn prompt helpful chemical chain-reactions in the amygdala. This removes specific AMPA Receptors from the surface of neurons in the amygdala where the traumatic event is ‘stored’.

Dr Ronald Ruden is also an author of ‘When the Past is Always Present’ and ‘The Craving Brain’.
Havening has a growing body of empirical evidence and published research to show that it successfully works on trauma, such as phobias, traumatic memories, experiences and events through to the PTSD.
However it’s not just for trauma and negative past experiences; it is proving highly effective in improving resilience and wellbeing, leading to a balanced, calm and resourceful state of mind. Please see www.havening.org website for the latest research news.
It is important to be aware that not everyone who claims to use Havening is certified to do so. Certification is a complex process ensuring Practitioners are thoroughly trained, assessed and deemed safe and competent. They have the required level of knowledge and are equipped to manage the complexities of trauma and to keep you safe. Please do ensure you choose a certified practitioner like me, please see the havening.org website to locate a practitioner near you.
